Es la primera vez que veo en una hoja de promo la imagen de las ondas musicales de los temas, y encima lo acompañan de explicaciones técnicas informando de los sonidos y efectos que han ido utilizando a lo largo del tema. Esta es una de esas muestras de originalidad que a veces faltan en la escena electrónica, donde lo más díficil es conseguir un estilo propio. Quenum y Lee Van Dowski, dos franceses afincados en Ginebra, han unido esfuerzos para sacar adelante un nuevo sello (Num) y aqui tenemos la primera referencia. Conociendo sus anteriores trabajos tanto juntos en Imploz y en Cadenza como por separado, sabemos que nos vamos a encontrar con escasos sonidos. En "Invisible" se han juntado con Andrés García y nos riegan los oidos con dos cortes de minimal techno en donde los clicks ponen el ritmo y el bajo el alma. El segundo corte tiene un toque más electroide que recuerda a las producciones que más están pegando ahora en las pistas de baile. |

Emerging from under the wing of Luciano’s Cadenza imprint – Num springs up and allows centre stage to its founders – Quenum, Lee Van Dowski and Andres Garcia. “Invisible” is what used to be called a monotrack in the old days – one note jam minimal – why use more? Echo all over the shop, busy, dark, clicking but never jarring - a huge breakdown unwinding into space filled soon enough with the widest of bass signals. Restless kinetic energy – big big tuuuuune! |

Schon wieder eine neues Label im Kompakt vertrieb. Diesmal mit einem Sound der sich vielleicht am besten - wenn man es sich einfach machen will - als rockender Minimalismus alter Prägung beschreiben liesse. Straighte Tracks mit viel kleinteiliger Percussionarbeit der digitalen Art, Basslinesequenzen die ein wenig trancig erscheinen und klöppelnde Grundstruktur in der es wieder stark um Modulation der einzelnen Sounds geht. Zwei Tracks, zwei Versionen des Themas, zwei mal relativ neutral in der Stimmung, und auf der B-Seite etwas upliftender in den Beats und mit einem Hauch Mathew Jonson Stimmung. Noch nicht der grosse Wurf, aber wir bleiben dran.

A new label is just born in Geneva: Num Records freshly launched by Philippe Quenum (half of Access 58 with already about 50 releases out!) and Lee Van Dowski (Mental Groove, Anti-iiism, Cadenza). This first EP is made of two groovy longplayers that are based on rhythmic microsamples: the first one is marked by a strong dark bass and the second one gives the impression that Mathew Jonson has been invited at half of the track. Excellent!! Something funny to note, on the promosheet are printed waveforms of the two tracks with some comments about their components (enlarge image). Check it!!

Quenum and Lee Van Dowski first came to attention with their debut release on Luciano's Cadenza imprint. Now they've set up their own label and the result is this stunning two track EP. The sounds are tight and finely sculpted, reminiscent of autechre, while the rhythms keep the toes tapping and the hips shaking. |
